A Partnership Four Decades in the Making

More than 200 government officials, CIP Council members, diplomats, researchers and industry representatives gathered in Beijing on June 23, 2026, for the Asia-Pacific Potato Industry Cooperation International Symposium, organized by CIP's Asia-Pacific center (CCCAP) and hosted by its Yunnan station. An account from CCCAP traces the collaboration back to 1978, when CIP experts first began working with Chinese counterparts — a relationship that has since introduced more than 7,000 potato germplasm accessions into China, with 2,002 core resources now held in standardized preservation. China accounts for the world's largest area planted to both potatoes and sweet potatoes, farming 84.89 million mu of potatoes for 98.83 million tonnes of output, a report from CCCAP notes, with sweet potato planting and production likewise ranking first globally. The collaboration has built seven joint laboratories and seven regional work stations, trained more than 300 technical staff in China and abroad, and established a jointly built early-warning network for Asian late blight monitoring, according to CCCAP. Helen Hambly, chair of the CIP Council, said the relationship dates to 1985 and has produced results in germplasm exchange, technology transfer, talent training and platform building, adding that the Council intends to keep backing CCCAP's role as a regional hub. Wei Zhenglin of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs' International Cooperation Department said the ministry will deepen its strategic cooperation with CIP and continue supporting CCCAP's operations in China. Sun Tan, vice president of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, pointed to germplasm exchange and joint breeding, overseas demonstration of hybrid potato technology, and talent exchange as three areas where CAAS plans to deepen cooperation.

Where the Technical Work Is Headed

Keynote sessions at the symposium covered hybrid potato genetics, a tetraploid potato pan-genome, diploid hybrid breeding, sweet potato germplasm preservation, stress-tolerant breeding and regenerative agriculture, presented by experts from the UK, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Pakistan alongside teams from China Agricultural University, Nanjing Agricultural University and the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. CIP deputy director Hugo Campos, national potato industry chief scientist Xu Jianfei, and national sweet potato industry chief scientist Li Qiang delivered keynote reports on China's potato industry outlook, agricultural approaches to industry upgrading, and the core path for sweet potato industry development, respectively. Wei Qiwen, vice chair of the China Seed Association, called for continued opening of germplasm exchange channels, coordinated work on virus-free seed potatoes, smart early-warning systems and intelligent cultivation, and an open multilateral cooperation structure for the industry. Gong Xifeng, who leads CGIAR's China office, reviewed 40 years of CIP's work in China from personal experience and said CGIAR intends to link CIP with China's major agricultural research programs.
