ITC's Technico Scales Aeroponic Seed Potato Output to 100 Million Mini-Tubers

ITC Limited's wholly owned subsidiary Technico is adding 60 controlled-environment greenhouses to its aeroponic seed potato operation, lifting total production capacity to 100 million TECHNITUBER mini-tubers. The number matters because of where it sits in the multiplication chain. Every G1, G2 and G3 seed lot that eventually reaches a commercial grower traces back to volume produced at this stage, so a jump to 100 million units is effectively a bet on expanding the clean foundation under a much larger volume of downstream seed and, eventually, table and processing crop.

Aeroponic production exists specifically to solve a purity problem — growing tubers in a suspended, soil-free environment keeps them isolated from the soil-borne pathogens and pests that erode seed quality generation after generation. Technico specializes in producing pre-basic potato seed using this method, and the company frames the expanded facility as a way to widen access to healthy planting material, support higher crop productivity, and strengthen the seed potato value chain more broadly.

That framing is worth taking seriously rather than treating as boilerplate. Seed potato systems in much of the world are constrained less by field acreage than by how much clean G0 stock exists to multiply in the first place. A sixty-greenhouse addition is a direct answer to that constraint, not a marginal efficiency gain.

The mini-tuber expansion sits inside a larger research push through ITC's Life Sciences and Technology Centre, which is applying advanced breeding technologies, molecular genetics, and digital tools across multiple crops — potato among them, alongside wheat, tobacco, eucalyptus and subabul. The company is expanding its ITCMAARS digital platform toward a Farming-as-a-Service model that links crop production to buyer requirements through certification, traceability and sourcing systems, and highlighted organic spice exports supported by a processing facility in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh.

Read alongside the Technico expansion, this suggests ITC is building matching infrastructure at both ends of its agricultural strategy: cleaner, higher-volume planting material on the supply side, and digital traceability and export-oriented processing on the demand side.
